NNRA CLOSES 19 HOSPITALS IN RIVERS AND IMO STATES

In a bid to exercise the provision of section 6(j) of the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act, the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority on 12th November, 2025 issued enforcement notices for the immediate closure of nineteen (19) Medical facilities within the jurisdiction of the South South Zonal Office in Rivers State and Imo state.

The enforcement action became necessary due to failure of the facilities to subject their practices to the Authority’s regulatory control despite several attempts by the SSZO

The enforcement exercise approved by the NNRA DG Dr Yau Idris and carried out by the NNRA SSZO teams led by the Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Evelyn Vincent-Furo and accompanied by Nigeria Police EOD Unit and NTA Port Harcourt, targeted facilities operating radiation-emitting equipment without valid licenses.

The NNRA has emphasized its commitment to ensuring compliance with nuclear safety and radiation protection regulations and has called on other facilities to subject their practices to regulatory control to avoid enforcement action. The Authority has also recommended sustained enforcement exercises and sting operations to ensure compliance.

The Zonal Coordinator in her remark advised the public to be aware of the dangers of ionizing radiation and to patronize only medical facilities that are compliant with NNRA regulations.
