Dr. Idris is an experienced nuclear regulator and radiation protection expert. He is a pioneer staff of the NNRA having joined the Authority in 2004 as Chief Regulatory Officer and rose to the rank of Director. He has a PhD (1998) in Applied Nuclear Physics from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, M.Sc. Physics (1992) from the University of Ibadan and B.Sc. Physics (1988) from the University of Maiduguri.

He served as Kaduna State Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources and before joining the NNRA was a Lecturer/Researcher in Physics with Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and University of Maiduguri for a total of 15 years.

Currently, Dr Idris is Chairman of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) Bureau of Conference of States Parties, the Chairman of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA) having served as the Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Forum. He is an Advisory Board Member for the Africa Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP) and Board Chairman of the Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP)

Dr Idris is Member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Working Forum on Regulatory Supervision of Legacy sites (RSLS); the IAEA Steering Committee on Competence of Human Resources for Regulatory Bodies; Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG); and is a Member of the Steering Committee of the FNRBA. He also coordinates several IAEA nuclear safety and radiation protection projects in Nigeria

From 2005 to 2006 Dr Idris lead the NNRA Team that successfully licensed one of the biggest radiological facility on the continent of Africa, the 300,000 Ci (upgradeable to 1,000,000 Ci) Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) located at Nuclear Technology Centre in Abuja, Nigeria

Dr Idris had several trainings in Radiation Safety, Reactor Safety and Technology, Nuclear Power Plant Development and Nuclear Security in Korea, United States, Austria, United Kingdom and several other countries.

Dr. Idris is a Consultant with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has been engaged as Expert/Resource Person at several IAEA Regional Training Courses for Regulators on Authorization and Inspection of Radiation Sources held in many countries within Africa and Middle East.

He was in Mauritius in 2018 as an IAEA Expert to conduct One-Week Workshop on Radiation Protection and Safety, and assist with developing a Radiation Protection Module for a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Nuclear Science at the University of Mauritius.

Dr Idris was in Lesotho in 2016 as an IAEA Consultant to Conduct a National Induction Course on Radiation Safety and to Provide Technical Assistance and Advice the country on Conducting Initial Regulatory Activities.

He was also in Zambia in 2014 as an IAEA Expert to Conduct Basic National Training Course on Radiation Safety for Newly Recruited Staff of Zambian Radiation Protection Board, Lusaka, Zambia

Dr Idris served as a Consultant/Lecturer at the IAEA Regional Training Course for Regulators on Authorization and Inspection of Radiation Sources for Member States in the Africa Region in Khartoum, Sudan in 2013, in Accra-Ghana in 2011 and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2010

He is currently serving as IAEA Fellowship Supervisor for Foreign Regulators on Fellowship in NNRA and has trained several regulators from other countries such as Sudan, Uganda, Angola, Tanzania, Ghana, etc for periods ranging from 2 to 3 months in Nigeria. For the past 15 years Dr Idris has been an IAEA Course Director/Coordinator for several IAEA activities in Nigeria.

He also serves as Consultant for drafting and publishing IAEA International Safety Standards such as the IAEA Safety Guide No. TS-G 1.6 - Schedules of Provisions of the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, IAEA Vienna, Austria (2010 Edition).

Dr Idris has presented several Seminar/Conference papers both at national and international events and has authored/co-authored several scientific publications/technical reports in Peer Reviewed International Scientific Journals. He has attended several IAEA organized international trainings, conferences and workshops in the area of nuclear safety, nuclear security, radiation protection and nuclear power technology

He is a Member of the FNRBA Standard Committee, Nigerian Institute of Physics (MNIP), Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP), the Materials Society of Nigerian (MMSN) and the Nigerian Materials Research Society (Nigerian-MRS) amongst others.

He has received several awards such as International Leadership Gold Award for Excellence, Nigerian Selfless-Service Gold Award (NISSGA) and Legends’ Noble Awards amongst others.
