NNRA BORNO OPERATIONAL OFFICE SHOWCASES KEY ACHIEVEMENTS AT WEEKLY IN-HOUSE SEMINAR

Engr. Babagana Modu-Tela, Head Borno Operational Office (BOO) at the NNRA weekly in-house seminar on August 27, 2025, highlighted the office’s significant accomplishments between 2023 to 2025. Key milestones include bringing the largest Radiotherapy Complex in West Africa (UMTH) under regulatory control, progressing the largest Interventional Radiology Centre in Africa, enhancing compliance and revenue from medical facilities, securing office and staff accommodations from the Borno State Government, and facilitating the employment of 50 Radiographers trained in India. The office also encouraged radiation workers to participate in NNRA’s RSO trainings.

Operational achievements included issuing 28 authorizations/licenses, inspecting 35 facilities, conducting 29 follow-ups, and completing a comprehensive survey of facilities in Borno and Yobe States. The office carried out search-and-secure operations at scrap yards and construction sites, delivered awareness presentations to professional bodies, supported University of Maiduguri students’ research, sustained in-house seminars, assisted UMTH during emergency flood response, and collaborated with the Ministry of Mines on licensed mining sites.

Financially, revenue increased significantly from the previous year, while voluntary staff contributions funded essential services such as internet, power supply, security, transportation, and maintenance to enhance productivity. These achievements demonstrate the office’s commitment to regulatory excellence, stakeholder collaboration, and innovation in nuclear safety, reinforcing NNRA’s mandate to protect lives, property, and the environment in the North-East.
