A 3-day European Instrument for International Nuclear Safety Cooperation (INSC) 2021-2027 Project Kick-off Meeting took place in Rabat, Morocco, with the theme: “Strengthening Nuclear Safety and Regulatory Capacity in Africa.” The meeting being financed by the European Union brings together participants from six African countries; Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and the host country, Morocco and involves cooperation with members of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA).
The EU-INSC Project objective is to support the promotion of nuclear safety culture and radiation protection, the safe management of spent nuclear fuels and radioactive wastes and the application of effective and efficient safeguards of nuclear materials in non-EU countries and aims to enhance nuclear safety and strengthen regulatory capacity in beneficiary countries. The INSC support to the FNRBA shall be carried out in accordance with standards and best practices used in the EU enhancing and strengthening the nuclear safety, radiation protection and emergency preparedness of the beneficiaries.
Key partners and participants in the project include; French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), Belgium Nuclear Technical Support Organization (BEL-V), Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CNS), Finland Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), German Society for the Safety of Nuclear Installations and Reactors (GRS), Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SUNJ) and the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN)
Delegation from Nigeria attending the meeting is led by Dr. Yau Idris, Director General/CEO of the NNRA are Adamu Hussaini, General Manager of the Authorization & Enforcement Department, and Mr. Tunde Malik-Agbalaya from the Quality Management & Protocol Unit.
