NIGERIA AND U.S. DEEPEN NUCLEAR SECURITY COOPERATION WITH NEW MOU

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, reaffirming over 20 years of collaboration in nuclear security.

NNRA Director General Dr. Yau Usman Idris hailed the agreement as a major step forward for Nigeria’s regulatory framework, emphasizing its role in enhancing national capabilities and safety practices.

U.S. Ambassador Richard M. Mills underscored the MOU’s focus on strengthening cooperation in areas including regulation, physical protection, training, and emergency response.

The renewed partnership aims to mitigate risks associated with nuclear and radiological materials and promote their safe use across sectors such as medicine, energy, and agriculture. Ambassador Mills also encouraged expanded commercial engagement in civil nuclear technology.

The NNRA called for increased support for staff participation in global training and regulatory events, including fast access to visas. Both sides agreed the MOU lays a solid groundwork for advancing shared goals in nuclear security and safety.
