As part of efforts to strengthen national and regional capacity for effective radiation emergency response, participants of the ongoing Regional Training Course on Radiation Emergency Management conducted a practical field drill at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) parade ground. The exercise was carried out under the guidance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and supervised by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), the body responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and safety in nuclear and radiological activities.
Welcoming the participants, Assistant Commandant General Abdulkadir A. Sulu emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating that although no one prays for accidents, it is essential to remain proactive. He encouraged participants to engage actively in the exercise, noting that “no knowledge is ever lost.”
The drill simulated a real-time radiological emergency scenario, offering participants the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course. Key aspects of the response included incident notification, first responder activation, containment measures, and coordinated actions among various emergency support teams.
The NSCDC demonstrated critical tactical procedures such as area evacuation, radiation monitoring, and implementation of communication protocols under stress conditions.
