Technical Support Organization

National Institute for Radiation Protection and Research

The NNRA’s activities are supported by technical inputs from National Institute for Radiation Protection and Research, University of Ibadan (the Institute), which serves as its Technical Support Organization. This followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the NNRA and the University, the leading university in Nigeria on radiation related matters having singlehandedly managed the Federal Radiation Protection Service (FRPS) since 1964. The MOU provides for, among others, the ceding of the infrastructure of the defunct FRPS to the NNRA for the situation of the Institute.

Its mission is to provide information through Training and Research in Radiological Protection so as to ensure the protection of life property and the environment from the harmful effects of Ionizing Radiation in Nigeria and beyond. Also, it has the following functions which are:

  • Advise the NNRA and provide information on Radiation Protection Matters
  • Research in the use and effects of Ionizing Radiation
  • Provide Training in Radiation Protection
  • Maintain Radiation Standards for Nigeria through the operation of the Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL)
  • Provision of Radiation Protection Services
