URANIUM EXPLORATION, MINING AND PROCESSING REGULATIONS READY.

The draft regulations on Nigerian Uranium Exploration, Mining and Processing are ready. The Technical Advisory Committee Chairman, Professor Idris Isa Funtua, while submitting the draft to the Director-General, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, NNRA, Professor Shamsideen Elegba, said the draft adequately caters for safety and security issues in Uranium mining and processing.

DG, NNRA with Members of the Committee

Professor Elegba thanked the committee for a good job. The draft regulations, which awaits a final approval to come into force, sets-up the basic technical and organisational requirements to be complied with by Uranium and Thorium mining, milling and processing operators in Nigeria. This is in order to limit, to a reasonable level in a manner that is consistent with Nigeria’s international obligations, the risks to national security, health and safety of persons as well as the environment associated with exploration, mining and processing of radioactive minerals like Uranium and Thorium. The regulations, when in force, should apply in addition to the Nigeria Basic Ionizing Radiation Regulations 2003, Nigerian Radioactive Waste Management Regulations 2006, Nigerian Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials Regulations 2008 and all other related regulations by the NNRA.
