The AFRA II (RAF9038) Project on “Self Assessment of Regulatory Infrastructure for Safety and Networking of Regulatory Bodies” was organized by the IAEA in collaboration with the NNRA, in Abuja, Nigeria from 15th – 19th June, 2009.
2. PARTICIPATION
The RTC was attended by a total of thirty one (31) participants from 14 African Countries including five (5) NNRA Staffs. These Countries are Angola, Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Seychelles, Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
Three Resource Persons from the IAEA took the Participants through the lecture presentations and practical exercises of the Training Course.
3. OBJECTIVES
i. At the end of the RTC it is expected that self-assessment is widely adopted and implemented in participating countries for continuous improvement of performance of Regulatory Bodies. This management tool will be subsequently used by FNRBA to assess radiation safety in the seven thematic areas it has identified for the region.
ii. Participants are expected to train regulatory officers on SAT in their respective countries.
4. OPENING CEREMONY
The Opening Ceremony of the RTC was chaired by the Nigerian Minister of National Planning Dr, Shamsuddeen Usman. It was also attended by the Director-General of the Standard Organization of Nigeria as the Special Guest and the Director-General of the NNRA, Prof. S.B. Elegba and the NNRA Management Team.
In his remarks, the Nigerian Minister of National Planning stated that Self-Assessment, as management tool, is the first step in total quality management; thus is considered a useful tool in the realization of any national economical development plan. He thanked the IAEA and the NNRA for organizing such event as the SAT is particularly important to National planning.
In his remarks, the DG of the NNRA welcomed all participants to Nigeria and thanked the IAEA and all the nominating countries. He highlighted the importance and the benefits of the SAT and concluded by wishing the participants a fruitful deliberations and a happy stay in Nigeria.
The event was a complete success as has been attested by both the IAEA resource persons and the participants.
